It seems like everybody is asking you to do their 30 day trial — for their site or software or service. Everywhere you look there’s another 30 day challenge, a cleanse, a wellness routine, or another Kickstarter. There’s nothing inherently wrong with any of those. But none of those things ever ask you to rein it in. They only ask you to do MORE. And let’s face it, in 2019, we already have A LOT OF STUFF GOING ON IN OUR LIVES. What if there were a way we could do LESS?
So starting in 2019, I’m going to try something radically simple. Each month, I’m going to propose a single item that we can all try to go without. It will be a different topic each month. What kind of topic you ask? Well, for example, in January we tried a month without Facebook. For some of us it was very difficult, for others it was freeing. But we all learned something. And that’s really the whole point.
There is no cost. No guilt. No failure. No judgment. If you’re trying, you’re succeeding. That’s why it’s called TRY a month without. Just try and see what happens.
Are you ready?
Simple: I’ll send you an email each month, announcing the topic and asking if you want in. That’s it.
No fees.
No spam.
No selling your info.
Your information stays private.
This isn’t about me telling you how to live your life. The point is simply to be more mindful about products or technologies that may be playing an outsized role in our lives. I emphasize MAY be playing an outsized role. When we try a month without, we’re granting ourselves a reset, so we’ll know how much of that product or technology we want to allow back into our lives. For example, after a month without Facebook, I decided that I still wanted to use Facebook for some of its features, but that I wanted to keep the app off of my phone to prevent myself from the “mindless scrolling.” Everyone will learn something different, but I can guarantee you, you will learn something about yourself and be able to gain some mastery over your own time and attention.
I could totally do this alone, but I figured it would be more insightful, maybe meaningful, and definitely fun, to do this with other people, so I’m opening up the experience to anyone/everyone who cares to join.
If you want to share your feedback around how it’s going, or have a suggestion for another topic, I’d love to hear from you - john@tryamonthwithout.com.
